Estonia is famous not only for its e-Residency but also for its favorable conditions for digital nomads. By the way, it was the first to introduce this type of visa. Estonia gives digital nomads the right to stay in the country for up to a year, and the application process takes only 30 days. In addition, Estonia’s high “digitization” is an obvious advantage.

Requirements for digital nomads in Estonia

Estonia has a fairly short list of requirements for digital nomads:

  • The monthly income of the nomad must be at least 3504 euros.
  • You must be able to work remotely.
  • You must prove that you have accommodation for the time you are in Estonia.
  • You must work for a company that is registered outside Estonia.
  • It is necessary to pay a visa fee of 80 EUR.

Documents for Digital nomad visa in Estonia

The package of documents necessary for visa issuance is short:

  • Valid passport (it should not expire earlier than three months after the end of the visa).
  • Completed application form (can be submitted online).
  • A bank account statement to confirm the stability of your income.
  • Confirmation that you can work remotely for a company that is not registered in Estonia – it can be a contract with an employer or a cover letter from them that you are going to work remotely in Estonia.

You can apply for a visa at the Estonian embassy in your country. If you are already in Estonia and want to stay there longer, you can bring your documents to any branch of the Police and Border Guard Board.

Taxes for digital nomads

All digital nomads must pay personal and corporate taxes if they own or co-own a company. As a rule, they are paid in the country whose tax resident the nomad is. That said, most countries will consider you a tax resident if you are in their territory for more than 183 days.

And don’t forget about double taxation unless there are agreements between your country and the country you are traveling to avoid it.

Of course, everything depends on the specific country, but for digital nomads, the issue of paying taxes in another country is still very complicated. That is why many nomads prefer to obtain tax residency in the countries to which they are relocated. An Estonian e-residency is the perfect solution to all your tax problems in Estonia.
